Here is the uncomfortable test: if you died tonight, would the documents you have actually do what you think they do - or would your family discover, at the worst possible moment, that they don't? A lot of business owners have a will drawn up years ago and some beneficiary designations set once and forgotten. That feels like being covered. Often it isn't.
The real question isn't whether you have documents - it's whether they'd hold up if they were tested today, and whether they still reflect the business and the family as they actually are now, not as they were when the ink dried. Businesses grow. Families change. A plan built around an older, smaller version of both can create exactly the mess it was meant to prevent.
An owner's estate plan has to answer questions an ordinary one never touches. Who runs the business the morning after? Does it get sold, by whom, on what timeline?
And - a big one - is there liquidity to cover what's owed, or would your family be forced to sell in a hurry? (Washington's estate tax makes that liquidity question sharper for business owners than most realize; we cover that in depth in our piece on Washington estate tax and your business.) A standard will doesn't address any of this, and it's exactly the part your family would be facing at the worst possible moment.
If you'd like a starting number, our Washington estate tax calculator estimates the state and federal bill in about a minute.
This reframe matters. An estate plan isn't really for you.
It's the last set of instructions you leave the people you love, and they'll be reading it on the hardest day of their lives. That's the standard it has to meet - clear enough, current enough, and coordinated enough that it makes their worst week easier instead of harder. A folder nobody's opened since 2015 doesn't meet that standard, no matter what's technically in it.
The estate attorney drafts the documents. The CPA handles the tax. But someone has to hold the whole financial picture and make sure the estate plan, the business, and the family's needs all point the same way.
